California Adventures

We've had a great two weeks.  The murder mystery dinner was lots of fun.  Moonbeam Rainbow and the birdwatcher were not involved in the murder, but weren't very good sleuths, either!  Neither one of us guessed right, but we had fun trying.  There were over 50 people there, and they all seemed to have a great time.

Here are some of the people who attended, with their costumes.  What a night!

Yesterday, we spent our "P" day at the ocean again.  Wow, this mission is really hard :)  We drove down to Santa Cruz, and stopped at "The Mystery Spot" on the way.  This is a very strange place.  The setting is among a forest of redwoods, and very beautiful.  This spot is what they call a gravity center, where there seem to be strange forces at work.  Most of the effect is because they show you a slanted house that they claim slid down the mountain after it was built:

They go through a series of experiments that make balls roll and water flow uphill, and it seems highly unlikely, but there still is something strange about the place.  Dad and I both experienced a feeling of pressure and lightheadedness that is unexplained.  We weren't the only ones, some of the younger people felt it also.  Whatever it was, it was fun.  We'll take whoever comes to visit us there (hint, hint).

We then drove up Highway 1, stopping to watch wind surfers (amazing), and pelicans diving for their food.  That was enthralling, and as I had the binoculars trained on a bird, up popped a whale!  Holy cow!  It was something.  There were a group of them out there, and we watched for an hour as they flipped their tails and spouted.  Listening to the crashing waves and seeing the beauty of nature was just what we needed after a busy week of meetings and visits.  This week will be equally busy, and we are enjoying it.  We got invited to dinner at 2 members homes this coming couple of weeks, and we always enjoy that.  Plus we try to take the elders and/or sisters out to dinner once a month, and will get a chance to do that next week.  They are so much fun to work with.  Add in the MSA activities, (movie night this Friday) and we don't feel like we are working at all!  But we hope what we are doing is helping.  It sure helps us!

We are looking forward to Conference this next weekend, and hope a member family will take pity on us and invite us to watch in their home, as we don't have TV or enough internet data to watch in our apartment.  We realize how much we take for granted living in SLC, where access to Conference is so easy, and watching it with family is so fun!  Hope you all enjoy it, even though we won't get to look for our favorite choir member this time.  We will miss seeing you, Amy, but know you did the right thing by taking time off.  You are so very busy and stressed.  You all have so much on your plates, and we are so proud of you for all you do.  We hope the grandkids are all healthy, especially JJ.  That crappy child! :)  Cailee's meds for her asthma weren't working, so they changed them and she is doing better.  We got a great, newsy email from Aubrey last week that filled us in on them.  We so appreciate any and all communication with our family.

Forgot to mention that we stopped at a fish market on the way home at Half Moon Bay and had the best clam chowder we'd ever eaten.  It sure was a stinky place, but great fish.  Here are some of what they had on offer:

                                                              Live lobsters, dead fish!

So that's our life.  We are trying to enjoy every minute, and time is flying.  Our mission is one third over!  Wow!  After the holidays, it will be half over.  We can't believe it.

The Birthday month is almost here, and we will try to get the cards out on time to all our October celebrants.  Forgive us if we don't make it quite on time.  We try....  We're so grateful to those of you who will be at Bruce's baptism.  It sure is hard not to jump on a plane and fly over for it, but we feel like we need to concentrate on our purpose here and let you all and the Lord take care of the family.  We know you do a great job.

Kiss each other for us, and enjoy your busy lives.  We love and miss you all.  Tracy, post a picture of your sweater.  One of the cute sister missionaries is learning how to knit, and told me about someone who could teach me, left handedness and all.  I might take her up on it.

Bye for now.  Keep on blogging!

  1. Sound like you're having a lot of fun. I miss you so much. Wish we could come for a trip but it will have to be next year.
We've had a crappy week. This time it's Donovan being the crappy child lol. He has influenza b. It is really crummy stuff. Our kids were pretty healthy for a couple years so I guess it's our turn now. I've been staying busy with that and babysitting. So that's all sorry so short. Love you all

  2. I miss you guys too! Soooo much!! It would be so fun to take a trip out there. Especially in the winter so we could get a break from the sub freezing temperatures. I can't say that for sure that we would be able to do that, but it would be very fun.

I love the pictures! You both look great. I have heard about that mystery spot. We were going to go visit it when we were in Santa Cruz, but we ran out of time.

I am extremely jealous of all the yummy seafood you get to eat! It's my absolute favorite, but I rarely get to eat it. My whole family is anti-seafood. Well, except for Alex.

Erin I'm so sorry you have to deal with sick kids. Especially the flu! Yuck! That is miserable. Poor Donovan. I hope he feels better soon. Let me know if I can help you in any way.

Our week has been busy like always. We had parent teacher conferences for all 4 kids, which is so crazy! I don't know how you did it, Mom. I had a pretty heavy load of school stuff this week too and Shawn had to work every day but Tuesday. But he actually had an interview this week for a position at the U hospital. He wasn't even looking for anything, it just sort of fell onto his lap. A friend of his just got hired there, so she referred Shawn to her boss and he told her he wanted Shawn to come in and talk to him. So we'll see what happens with that.

Well that it for now. I love you, sweet family!

  3. So sorry your kids are sick, EJ. I don't know what influenza b is. The fever, achy kind? Miserable. Hope you don't get it, and Donovan gets better soon. Good luck to Shawn with his job search. That would be so great! Meg, we had kids in 4 different schools once, if you count Tracy in college. Although we never had to do parent teacher conferences with that! It does get pretty crazy. You are in the middle of the busiest times for your family. But you can do it!
We have an amazing story to tell in next week's blog! Tune in!

  4. And she leaves us with a cliffhanger. Very sneaky, Mom.

  5. Yay for everything! Loved reading all of this :)
    Update on everyone:
Rob and Carson went last night for a campout up at Dog Lake (up Cottonwood canyon). Rob, Carson, and a couple of other kids were very prepared, so they did OK in the pouring rain. Some other guys, not so much, but they really needed an experience like that to learn some lessons. Rob had run to REI before the scouts left to pick up a few things, and one of those things was bear repellant. While the guys were all here yesterday afternoon waiting to leave, Rob asked me to go out and give one of the canisters of repellant to the other scout leader. I took it out there and got razzed mercilessly for being afraid of bears. One dad went so far as to claim that there were no bears up Cottonwood Canyon. "I've been camping and hiking up that canyon for 50 years and have NEVER seen a bear." I said, "Well lucky you. But just because you've never seen one doesn't mean they aren't there." The other scout leader chimed in on the harassment as well, claiming all sorts of heroic acts he would perform if they saw a "bear." This guy is from the Arizona desert, born and raised. I was thinking, "These guys think bears are like Big Foot…just a myth!" I was not amused. Fast forward 6 hours. (You know where this is going) After they made the hike with their packs and finished dinner, Rob insisted they hoist and tie their garbage up on a high tree branch. Again, the harassment, but this time did as they were told without too much since the scout master was the one giving the orders--not some dumb girl. Lo and behold, what should come grumbling into their camp in the middle of the night? A bear. duh. It shook the tree for a half hour trying to get the garbage bag before it gave up and left. Luckily it didn't bother with the food that one stupid boy had snuck into a tent, directly going against Rob's orders. Rob gave that kid an earful, making him cry. He told him he had better think twice about putting his life and the lives of everyone in the camp in jeopardy next time. This was also the scout who was supposed to be in charge of the tents. Luckily, Rob and Carson took care of their own, because this kid (Dax STEADMAN…insolent little nugget) didn't bother with a gear check. He is the senior patrol leader and never lets anyone forget it. Half the scouts had tents with only one pole. So the Arizona scout leader had to spend half the night in the rain trying to help boys rig their tents to stay afloat. He was eating some major humble pie when they came back today. He told me he had one hand on the trigger of the bear mace the whole night. hahahahahahahahahaha!!! I was nice and didn't rub anything in…much.
I'm just glad they're all back safely.
Caleb is doing great right now. He is turning all his work in and keeping current. He is now almost a whole inch taller than I. He loves ninth grade and being the oldest kid at the school. Everyone looks up to him, and he is a NICE boy. However he's kind of bummed about being the nice kid, because those kind aren't the ones getting all the attention from the girls at this age. I told him to be patient. The girls will realize in about two years that all the other guys are tools, and he is the one to get. Caleb has SBO written all over him. He's just awesome.

    1. That bear story is both hilarious and terrifying at the same time. I got the same kind of reactions up at camp with my bear warnings and I know for a fact that most of the girls kept food in their tents despite my warnings. A few of them said "Well I always take food in my tent and nothing has ever happened!" I just told them they were lucky and asked them if risking their life and everyone else's lives was really worth it over a bag of chips. Haha. I did scare a few of them though. Hopefully they will stay that way. I am totally telling this bear story next time!

    2. Yes! Anything to convince people bears exist places other than the zoo!

  6. Katie and Jen and I got to go to lunch yesterday since there was no school. We had a blast, and it's so nice to see Jen happier. She was diagnosed with endometriosis this week though, and has been in a lot of pain. That girl has had a hard year, but she's a trooper.
Katie is doing OK. She will lose her phone this Tuesday since she isn't done with her diploma, but them's the breaks. She told me she is actually kind of relieved. lol! That surprised me, but she admitted what a distraction it is. Keep praying for her.
I had a busy week with parent teacher conf, but it was so good to meet the parents of my kiddos. A lot of work got turned in the last couple of days as a result, and I've been grading papers all weekend. I'm just glad to see the parents on board. Even the meth mom is trying to get her daughter caught up. I feel so sorry for this girl. I had a feeling her family situation was shambles, but the second I met her mom, I knew why. So obviously a meth addict. Just completely looked and acted the part. It made my heart hurt, and it made me determined to give this girl the support she needs. The Hispanic families were my favorite. Such sweet and humble people. Many of them gave me a hug after the conference. They were just delightful.
I must admit, the last 6 weeks have been so busy and so packed, I have looked forward to this weekend when I knew many things would have calmed down. I have felt a bout of depression coming on though, and I've spent the weekend pretty low. I need to figure out a different mood stabilizer I can take, so my moods are more consistent. I go to my doctor this next week, so hopefully we can figure something out. She'll probably try lithium, so we'll see how that goes. I really don't want to try that, since Meg was so queasy on it all the time. Wish me luck.

Erin, give Donovan a hug from Aunt Amy and tell him to feel better soon.

    Love to all!!!

    Dinner on conference? Anyone??
